Study English for Law
All countries in the world have their own laws and also their own systems for describing their laws. In addition, English is increasingly becoming the lingua-franca, or common language for communication among lawyers throughout the world and especially in the European Union.
English is central to the understanding of key legal documents and proceedings such as:
- Contracts and licenses
- Court documents and related information
- Laws and briefs
- Legal correspondence [1]
In addition, employees of law firms nowadays are expected to have a high level of English speaking and writing skills. In addition, students of law, whether in English speaking countries or abroad will benefit from speaking English confidently in a legal setting. [2]
There are two primary tests available for legal English. The first is from Cambridge ESOL who teach over 3 million students around the world. The English for law examination they produce is called the International Legal English Certificate.
The second is the Test of Legal English Skills, or TOLES. Many global corporations like Daimler Benz and PricewaterhouseCoopers send their employees to take the exam to prove their ability in speaking English in an international law setting. The Law Society of England and Wales also recognises this test if on your CV. [3]
Regardless of which test you choose to take, both require a solid foundation of English. Languagelab.com's English City is the ideal place to cement your understanding of English in order to better score the highest you can and earn your legal English certificate.
